Enigma in Blue

Made at age 18, this was a pivotal piece of artwork in my development as an artist in that it was the piece in which I first explored what would become my signature “style” wherein images and subimages get woven together with calligraphic lines. This motif was inspired by Irish knots, and the spiraling patten of rectangles converging to the right eye in the painting denotes a rough implementation of the recursive relationship which defines the golden ratio, ϕ.

After high school, I donated this piece to my art teacher, feeling that if I kept it, it would simply be stored away and never seen or appreciated by anyone. The image above was composited together from the two old photos of the piece which I had. Below, you can see the source photos as well as the sketch I used as a basis for creating this self-portrait.
