As the president of the Art Club in high school, I initiated a door-painting project. Although only one other artist followed through on this idea that year, painting doors was our biggest contribution to the school during my time at the helm of the club, and I know it was appreciated. This was the door to my physics teacher’s classroom, and he specifically requested all of the essential elements of its design: the Mandelbrot fractal, the steam engine, as well as the two scientists featured.
The portraits of Einstein (apologies for the typo below in the labelled image) and Galileo showcase the nascent calligraphic style which I had pioneered with Enigma in Blue earlier the same year, and I thought depicting these minds as luminous articulations of intertwining geometric patterns suspended against the fractal background was a most appropriate homage. The steam engine is representative of the local V&T railroad, of which Dr. D was an enthusiast.
